Compact or Ultracompact for Artist
Hi Folks..

After getting help from people on this forum, I bought a Canon 400D to use as my first DSLR..

Now, I a need a small camera to carry around and use as a sketchbook. I am a professional painter and art teacher, and need the highest quality I can get..

Having become a little more familiar with digital cameras, but still a beginner, I'd like the following features:IS (I have a disability that makes my hands shake slightly)RAW (I plan to work on the photos to make them usable to paint from)Fast shutter speed (I plan to shoot a lot of photojournalism type photos.).

The longest zoom possible. (I would like to take shots where the subjects are completely unaware of me.).

Little noise at ISO 100 and 200, and perhaps 400. I will mostly use the camera outdoors on days ranging from sunny to cloudy..

Good white balance, so bright lights don't get burnt out (direct sunlight on trees or pavement, for example.).

If at all, I'd like a viewfinder, as looking through a viewfinder steadies my hands..

Thanks in advance for any help folks can give me. The people on these forums are very generous with their help, and have made things much clearer to me...

Canon G7 (10MP, 6x zoom with I.S., OVF) & Canon A710IS(7MP, 6x zoom with I.S., OVF) fit the bill, except Raw mode. (Raw Mode cameras are few, and those don't have long zoom. e.g. Fuji E900 (no I.S. however). Others don't have OVF & big-zoom.).

Among ultra-compacts, Ricoh R6 (7MP, 28-200mm lens with I.S.). No ultra-compact big-zoom has OVF so far.If OVF is priority then, Canon SD850IS (8MP, 4x zoom, OVF)..

Panasonic FZ8 is the only one that comes close, though it's not that small. You'll probably have to sacrifice one of your criteria..

As others have said, the camera that satisfies all your criteria doesn't exist. If you forget RAW you'll have more choice..

I'll lob in another model - the Panasonic LX2. I like mine - RAW, fully manual, IS, wideangle 28mm lens, sensor and screen. Pretty good in terms of shutter lag for a non-dSLR. Fits easily in a jacket (but not trouser) pocket..

Very good outdoors (though not a great performer indoors in poor light), but no long zoom or viewfinder. But I have used it for street photography of sorts:.

Thanks for all the replies..

I have heard that jpegs can be converted to TIFF files, which can be worked on without loss of quality. Is that true? In that case, I could probably live without RAW..

Therefore, I would be looking for small size (to carry in pocket), OVF, biggest zoom possible, IS. Is there a camera that would fit those criteria?.

With my shaky hands, am I better off with less zoom (Canon SD850IS) or no IS (Ricoh R6), or some other camera?.

Thanks..

R6 also has I.S. OVF is missing though..
