With all these new cameras that have largish high resolution screens, it would be nice to be able to use them as photo wallets with photos other than those taken by the camera itself. Can one load up a JPG on an SD card and display it on this camera? I'd really like to know. One of these days the digicam companies will see the light in putting simple viewers for standard jpgs and - gasp! - MP4/Divx decoders in their cameras.... (one could even imagine converting a powerpoint presentation to a stack of jpgs and using the camera as a presentation device instead of a laptop... such an unthinkable concept!.
Can one load up a JPG on an SD card and display it on this camera? Yes. The software that Canon includes with the camera, Zoombrowser EX, has a function to load images from a computer to the camera. I don't have the 870, but I have the SD800 IS and they are very similar. You can do it with the 800, and I'm sure you'll be able to on the 870. It can also be done with a card reader, but you have to put them on the card in a folder with the correct name. I've never cared about doing this, so I don't remember the details, but it has been posted to the Imaging Resource SD800 forum. If interested, you could search for it there..
I just purchased the SD 870 last week, and it's a great camera... however, I was wondering if anyone has tried to use it overseas, and if so, how did you charge the battery? In the User Guide, it says not to use an international adapter to charge the battery. Also, what is the battery life that I can expect if I just charge the battery and leave it out of the camera? I'm now wondering if I should have bought a camera that uses disposable batteries instead. Thanks....
Went on ebay and bought 3 xtra batteries for $12 w/shipping. I carry these in my bag and never have to worry about recharging the battery.....
The charger works at voltages between 110 -240 volts. All you need is an adapter to fit into the wall socket. I have a spare battery for my Canon Powershot SD600 and, between them have never found myself without power. They also take up much less room than regular AAA batteries.
I thought Dave stated in his review that this battery for this camera is Proprietary battery. So you can actually get non-canon battery? that's a good news!.
Be careful of counterfeit Lithium-ion batteries. Legitimate ones are relatively expensive because of the included safety devices and liability issues. See: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2111&id=27699.
Just got an SD870 and on p. 85 of the manual it shows a continuous icon, but my camera doesn't. Only shows single, 10 sec , 2 sec, and custom (and not the continuous icon). What gives? I've got a class 4 SDHC 4GB card?.
I compare this canon 870 with panasonic fx35.. in the end I go for this camera.. canon 870 due to it's image quality, wide angle (though panasonic is wider), and large lcd.. and less noisy than panasonic my review can be found at http://hightechwebs.blogspot.com/.
Own the Canon SD870IS. A great camera. However it does not permit 'in camera' cropping/trimming as Canon's latest cameras do, such as the 1100.
Any word on firmware update to fix or other means to obtain?.
I just returned from Spain. I used a voltage converter and had no issues at all. You should be concerned with carrying an extra battery. Since this camera uses the lcd as the viewfinder it eats a battery in 2/3rds of a day. Shooting video really hammers the battery. After a video turn off the camera and the battery will recover some but the video is a huge drain.
A plug adapter will not provide 125 volt power to your charger and European voltage is 208. So you need a converter with a plug adaptor. Put the newly charged battery in your pocket each morning and swap in the afternoon and you'll make it through every day with ease. Also get a huge SDHC memory card. several Gb.s! A 16 Gb should last a week without downloading!.
I recently recorded audio only on a trip to Europe and want to transfer my files to my Macbook Pro, but I can't figure out how to export them. I've tried plugging into the audio/video port, attaching that to my audio in on the computer, then turning on the camera, but then I have no access to the menu or anything else. Strange thing is I know I've made it work before, but I can't remember how and the manual seems to help only with playback of video to a TV..
