Just upgraded my Panasonic LC20 to a Canon G5. Its a huge difference from 2mp to 5mp. I did a lot of research as to which camera to buy. I narrowed it down to the G5, Olympus C5050 and the sony V1. All excellent cameras, so it came down to personal preference ie look and feel. So far, the G5 is great - I would highly recommend this camera to anyone. It takes brilliant photos esp in low light..

Do you call that a Review of the G5? I call it a half page listing of readily obtained features. Is that why it's not listed under new reviews on your Home page? For a 23 page Review, see www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_g5-review/index.shtml.

Redadare: Not sure what you are referring to but the G5 review is very comprehensive and has numerous pages of information, data, samples, etc. Perhaps you were only on one page of the review and mistakenly thought it was the entire review. I'd suggest you take another look..

Most humble apologies. I read the following line at the top of this thread which says Read our review of the Canon PowerShot G5 digital camera! Having clicked on it to discover a half page of generalities.I entirely missed the small link at the top which said (Next): Executive Overview>> From there at the bottom it plainly leads to the next subject, right up to subject 12 and then another 3 from there. VERY COMPREHENSIVE and time consuming - and greatly appreciated. Two things I note are 1. In the printer friendly version, the Test Results and Conclusion are not included and 2. no mention of this review is made on the Home page section that features new reviews.

Instead of purchasing the G3 2 weeks ago, it looks like the G5 would be a better though more expensive camera. Cheers .

Red.

I too would have totally missed the entire review had I not followed this discussion thread. "Executive Overview"?? Surely there's a better way to direct readers to the full review (which, by the way, was excellent...once I finally found it). My humble suggestion: "Full G5 review"..

The only thing that holds me back from the purchase of a G5 is the purple fringing. Is there a trick or something you can do to get arround this situation? Will it reduce if you lower the exposure upto -1EV ? and How frequent would it be at f8.0? I notice from the expamples that it only happens on extream bright areas, so it seems logical if these areas could be reduced in exposure that it will disapear. Or am I just being paranoid ?

Just a thought... what about the use of the netual density filter? Will that help.

Has anyone made image comparisons between the Canon G5 and the Olympus C-5050? I owned a G3 and really liked everything about it, exept that images from a friend's C-5050 were clearly sharper.

I gave the G3 to my son and bought the C-5050. I do not like to use it but the sharp pictures make it my choice; that's the main criterion.

If Canon has sharpened the image-making ability of the G5 to match the C-5050, I'd find a way to get one..

I have a G5. Only one lacking feature I think is the inability to use the Autofocus Assist beam on the EX flashes. The G5's assist light is too annoying and slow. The ability to use EX flashes is nice and gives extremely good photos. I put a 420EX on mine - though it makes the camera look miniscule and not so comfortable to hold. I have a D60 and can say that the G- series of cameras manage to use the EX flashes better than the D60, ie they produce the correct exposure, whereas on a D60 it's almost a hit and miss sorta thing - so I had to resort to a Sunpak 5000 in full manual mode on the D60..

Ok.. so I bought one. :P I'm happy, But I have come to answer my own question about my previos query on purple fringing. It seems to nearly disapear when useing "Neutral" or "low contrast" color mode which is fine and works to my satisfaction..

What would youi buy when having the choice between a G3 and a G5? The prioice difference is not very relevant, but I am interested in the speed issue. Can someone help? Thank you!.

Steve Maslin, I am also considering buying either a G3 / G5. I would much prefer a G5 but the reviews I have read tend to suggest that purple fringing is a much bigger issue with the G5 than with the G3 (as I like to take long exposure shots at night this is probably the only reason why I would consider buying a G3 instead of a G5). However, you mentioned that you bought the G5 and it works to your satisfaction could you please elaborate on this?. Does image quality suffer when you use neutral or low contrast color mode?. Your (or anyone elses) input would be appreciated. Thanks..

Hi to everyone!! .

I owned a Olympus C-5050, I tested a Coolpix 5400 and a Canon G5!!!! The C-5050 and the G5 have a hugly huge big noise problem!!!! Even at ISO 50 the noise is heavy. The coolpix 5400 is better in this sense and allow you to shot with a 28mm wide angle with an ED lense quality, the G5 has an 35-38mm wide angle not enought wide!!! .

All this compact camera have the same problem, this problem is due to the small CCD size!!! 5Mp on a small CCD 1/8" gives noise problem.

BTW the G5 is a good camera, very huge, ergonomic, RAW capatibility, well accessoried but I suffer for the nois so I retry to my love coolpix 885!!!.
