Canon or Fuji??
Hi,.

I have narrowed down my new camera search to the Canon A630 and the Fuji Finepix f31d. I am probably considered a novice and point and click type will be best. I will mainly be taking pictures of kids/family both indoors and outdoors. I like the vari-angle LCD monitor of the Canon, but am not pleased with the consistent feedback of red-eye and poor low light quality pictures. I like Fuji's face recognition and low light quality but feel the vari-angle monitor is an advantage. Any thoughts from those more seasoned in digital cameras? Thanks!!..

Well, If I were you, I'd buy Fuji. After all, you print out sensor output, not LCD screenshots, don't you?.

But I'm not that expirienced myself, and we haven't much Fujis here for some reason...

I don't see much value in the vari-angle LCD, particularly for family photos. What is important is image quality, and that's where the Fuji definitely does better. I have a Fuji F20, and I am very pleased with it's image quality, particularly in low light. When I need to shoot at odd angles, I just hold the camera at that odd angle and snap the shot. It's not a big deal. I've become pretty good at getting these odd-angle shots without having to even look at the LCD.

So just snap away. The only downside to this is that the F20 sometimes focuses in the wrong place (ie, not on the person's face), but that's a non-issue with the F31FD thanks to it's Face Detection technology..

I would go for image quality and high ISO performance over a swivel monitor any day. I have been using Canon SLRs for decades now, but I use a Fuji F31fd when I'm shooting with a P&S..

For the type of photography you describe, I would say the Fuji too. I bought an F20 camera last year and I love it - great indoor results...

I have a Fuji F31fd and a Canon A620. They're both fine cameras (as is the A630), but for your purposes particularly, I would choose the Fuji. No other small digicam comes close for indoor shots, and it does very well outside, too. I have a very recent comparison that you might be interested in: see http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1012&message=24011538.
