Canon G6 /img/avatar8.jpg looking for replacement
Hi all.

I have the canon G6 at the moment but would like to upgrade to a newer compact [ ish ] camera, is there anything out there yet that would be significantly better performance wise? I have looked at the G7 but was not overly impressed perhaps a different make this time, I do like the idea of optical stabilisation as a included function, please help? any ideas welcome...

If you must have RAW, it cuts down the list of cameras significantly. But even if RAW is not a requirement, the list is relatively small, among current models. Do you have a preference on sensor size? That could further cut down the options....

I eventually went for a Fuji E-900 myself, as it has RAW and is compact and has full manual, if you want it and reasonable noise levels. No IS and not perfect but closest to my needs..

As pointed out, RAW would be a major limiter..

I think the G7 is overpriced. Have a look at a Panasonic TZ3 ( RAW - don't know ), Canon A710 IS ( there is a RAW hack you should check that adds other features ) and the E-900,.

I had not looked at the G6 review itself and, having done so, in all honesty, I think you should stick with it. It looks like a great camera. No wonder people were disappointed by the G7 !.

Unless you find it actually weak somewhere specific I'd hang on and see what's available next year, or from this year's announcements..

I still like the E-900, of course, but you know your G6 and I doubt you'd do better with the E-900 in practice. You know your G6's limitations and advantages and that alone makes it a good choice..

If you have not used RAW I'd suggest you explore it - it adds a lot of flexibility to your camera..

2004 was the golden year of RAWsumers (non-DSLRs with RAW). The cameras of that era, including the G6 were not directly replaced by most manufacturers. As the traditional SLR manufacturers focus more and more on DSLRs and lenses, this segment has opened up. Ricoh has aggressively jumped in with the GX100/GRD, and if the sequential improvements continue, their next two cameras may be a breakway hit. And that's what it would take to force the traditional SLR makers to re-enter this segment. Fuji is another candidate as well since they do not plan to enter the sub-$1000 DSLR market.

Thanks again for the very interesting and helpull replys, I do use raw but mainly on shots that I know are the ones I want to work on and normally on my D20 or D5 that I use. I sold a fuji to buy the G6 which was like chalk and cheese the canon being superior in every way I have no real gripes with it, IQ is very good and it's metering is somthing else allmost impossible to fool far better than the D5 which in bright conditions usually needs some exposure comp. I suppose I'm just testing the water really just in case theres a real gem out there that i've missed.Cheers all...
