I think what you really need to do is compare the different lenses offered by both companies. That is where the real commitment is..

Both have lots of lens choices.Go and handle them both, play with the menus..
Do things that you are likely to do, such as change ISO, apature, and shutter speed.Which one feels best? Buy that one.A member of the rabble in good standing...
I second the put your hands on it..
When I purchased my first DSLR I looked at stats and lens selection and had decided on Canon. When I was in the camera shop I held the Canon and was about to purchase it when, on a lark, I asked to hold the Nikon. World of difference, for me the Nikon fit a lot better. Seeing as how both would get the job done, even though Canon did have a slightly better offering technically I chose the one that would feel good when holding it for 6-8 hours at a time.Your criteria may differ. In God we trust, everyone else we firewall.-#linux @ irc-2.mit.edu..

Hi, I am trying to decide between the 2 of them.
The Nikon D80 is a camera about half a step behind the EOS 30D. Canon and Nikon models avoid direct competition by straddling between camera classes. (from lowest class, to highest class:).

If you can get the 30D for *cheaper* than the D80, then it would be a bargain. The D80 is a great camera, but it was really designed to compete with the 400D, not the 30D..
The closest Nikon equivalent to the 30D would be the Nikon D200. Both have magnesium alloy body (not plastic) and a high 5 fps burst (not 3 fps)...

I tend to agree that D200 and 30D were on a apar..

Not sure that works. What about the D40X? That is direct competition for the 400D. And the 5D is a bit oddball and cramps the marketing of the 30D/40D..

Not much wrong with that advice BUT remember you are buying a system so your choice may be important for future direction..

I hear suggestions that the D200 may stay in production but certianly prices for that model have fallen also. I am a little surprised at the suggestion that a 30D can be obtained for significantly less than the D80. Maybe if you shop around you match the price or maybe the 30D is shopsoiled or whatever..
