If you take photos of people using the 17mm end, they will look a bit out of proportion, but the 40mm end should be okay. I guess an ideal portrait lens would be a bit longer, but it should be reasonably okay. try taking some at or near the long end of the zoom..

The 17-40 lens is a magnificent lens, but unfortunately it lacks a couple of centimeters in the long end to make it the perfect walkaround lens. In my opinion, the most useful walkaround lens is one with the 17/18-70mm range. The Sigma lenses are also quite good. Perhaps this will do the trick:.

Hi, if I had the 17-40 it would be sitting in my bag most of the time bec I take candids of people and for that type of photography, the 40mm is not long enough. The 17mm will give you distortion bec it is wide angle and the rays of light are entering the lens from an angle to the sensor. If Canon had an 18-200 VR lens that would have been te perfect walkaround. Since we don't I hear the 24-105 L IS is really good but I haven't used it yet.http://www.flickr.com/photos/freezingrain/..

Actually 40mm on APS-C is about as long as I would go with candids. 50mm, tops. Go much longer and you aren't in the scene. Go to 200mm or so and your photos take on a "stalker" look..

It's not about the angle of the light entering the lens, it's about distance to subject. You get perspective distortion with wide angles because it is easier to get up really close..

Maybe the perfect tourist zoom..

I know what you speak about, it is true that 200mm gives you the stalker look. But I find that still preferable to the 50mm frownie "get that camera out of my face before I break it" look.http://www.flickr.com/photos/freezingrain/..

As I said, 50mm is as long as I'd go. Better to do the 20mm "you don't mind me taking a few shots because I was actually talking with you"..
