can old lens be used with today's new digital bodies
I tried this question on the Canon site...but maybe I should have asked here...have an old Canon AE-1 with lens...wanted to know if the lens would be able to be used on new Canon digitals...if so, which ones, and which one would be best for someone returning to photography after a long absence....had very limited success with AE-1 due to lack of time with camera... more time now..need to start simple...main subject matter, nature, flowers, birds, insects, etc....thanks so much.....

No, the old Canon FD mount lens will not work on the new digital bodies, nor will they work on any of the older EOS Af bodies. Canon completely re-engineered the lens mount so the old Fd lenses will not work. There may be some sort of adapter that can be purchased to allow these omnlder lenses to work but you will loose most of your metering options as well as possibly infinity focus if the adpater rings does not have the optics in it needed to correct for the register differences in the EOS and FD mounts..

With what I have read about adapters and using the "old" lens....maybe I should start over...do you think I should go with an entry level DSLR or begin again with one of the p&s like Canon S3 due to the time lapsed since I used a SLR...my thoughts are continuing to photograph nature..especially butterflies, dragonflies, and birds...main interests....can this be done successfully with advanced P&S?..

You might want to consider a Pentax or some Nikon SLR bodies if you're starting over. They both have better compatibility with old lenses that you may find used and in good shape..

I had the same problem as you. My old Canon lenses are FD mounts and are useless to me on new bodies. After much deliberation I went with Pentax. Check out the Pentax and Nikon forums. If money is not an object the Leica M8 rangefinder will take the excellent old Leitz and Zeiss glass...

The big problem with P&S cameras taking pictures of moving things butterflies, etc. is shutter lag. It takes too long between pressingthe shutter release and the camera actually going off to take shots. The bird has left, and gone south for th winter..

Yepmy AE-1 developed the screech about 5 years ago, so now I have a Nikon D40. How I wish someone made a basic manual-focus-only DSLR that would use Canon's FD lenses.....

The OP wants to shoot insects, flowers, nature birds. i.e. a mix of macro and long telephoto. Two things that the M8 (or any rangefinder) are terrible at, unless you add a reflex housing to it, at which point you'd be better off with a DSLR..
