There are two solutions to this problem. There are online services that allow you to back up files on their services. these could later be downloaded when you get home. While this would be a very safe and secure method, you may find it hard to do if you don't have a laptop with you. You would need to find an interent cafe periodically to upload you photos from. these places usually charge by the minute, so it could be very expensive if you had to upload a GB of images ( this could easily take an hour or more if the connection is slow).
The other option is to buy a portable memory card backup device. This is basically a self contained hard drive with an interface and card reader that allows you to download your images onto it's hardrive. If you intend to reuse your memory card after you do this, I would get two of these devices so you always have two copies of each file..

A third possibility is to find a place that will transfer your images to a DVD or CD. There are lots of these scattered around europe. You can then mail the DVD's home so they don't get lost if your luggage disappears along the way..
Good luck and have fun.

Do you have an ipod?.

If so, there's a cheap way to transfer all your pics onto it as a backup...
Edit - sorry, but you might want to do a bit of research and check the compatability here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html..
Hi.
No, unfortunately I dont have an ipod...but I do have a creative zen vision:M 30GB which I bought for the trip! Great perhaps that'll work I thought......
Doh! only the 60GB model features the USB host option. I sure wish I bought the 60GB option now. I guess the cheapest and easiest solution here is to get my photo's put onto DVD, although i'm unsure what sort of places will do this??Is there any web info about this subject? how much is it likely to cost?.
Thanks for your help, it's appreciated..

I don't have 'around the world ' experience, but when we were in Italy, France, and Spain recently I noticed a lot of little photo developing places offered this service. In the US most of the chain pharmacies will make DVD's for you as well. A DVD can hold about 4.6 GB of data and as I remember they cost about $5 USD each to have made. I guess it will depend on where you are, but maybe others on this forum from around the world can give you more info..

A good place to post this question is in the Storage and Media Forum. There have been several discussions on travel and storage issues you may find helpful. I have also researched the same thing. I have decided to purchase more memory (CF) cards since they are reasonable in price and appear to be a stable solution. I will be traveling to Hawaii for only 2 weeks and not as long as you. I have found a few places in Hawaii that I can access a computer (hotel and resorts I will be staying at) to burn my files to DVD or CDR to and send one copy of them home.
For me it will work out I can do this twice with the added CF cards and more if needed..
Do you have a travel plan where you could contact the hotels or shops to see if it (computer or internet access) will be available to you? It may be that you can do the same. Just be sure to have 2 copies of everything just in case.ckbBe kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.visit my sites at http://www.photographybychris.netand at http://www.pbase.com/ckb..
Between camera shops which will burn DVD's for you and internet cafes where you can burn your own you should be covered most of the time. Send them home, if god forbid your bag vanishes you will not have lost all of your shots. Probably burning your own in an internet cafe is cheapest..
You have big cards do not just empty them when full, do it when the opportunity presents itself. Again god forbid someone steals your camera, it will not have weeks of shots in it. Also when it is full you may find yourself somewhere that you can not find a camera store or internet cafe..
The second option is get your own website/space and upload your files. You just need to know the ftp connection and login. In places with good connections this is practical..
If you are getting off the beaten track, africa, kurdistan something like that then get one of the suggested card reader drives. $160 is a great deal for that much storage. Photo stores and internet cafes will be rare, and even if you find one they will have old computers and technology that will not burn your discs, and slow connections that would make uploading them hard..
I suggest making all 3 options available to yourself if you are going on a really long trip, and yes I have done the same around the world for several years..
Also make sure you have more than one battery and a fistfull of various plug adapters for your charger.mark..
I recently went to a trip to Shimla..
I just walked into a cyber cafe (a place where you can browse the internet)and burned the pics onto a DVD.I paid Rs 30 INR for it (Around 0.66 cents).
The entire process took a while..
I am researching on a buying a portable hard drive, however I want one which can be used in all terrains. Not just the casual traveller/tourist locations...
