camera for amatuer
Hello,.

I apologise if this has been covered previously..

I would like to purchase a camera for personal use. It will be used to take pictures on holidays, birthdays etc. I am a beginner..

Is there any camera you could suggest which has optical zoom and a lcd display?.

I am prepared to spend around 175.

Any suggestions, advice would be very much appreciated..

Thank youAndrew Paul..

I have seen the Sony cybershot DSC-W200 and the DSC-T100.

What are your opinions on these cameras?..

Although it may sound impressive, the Sony's 12 megapixels will do nothing for the photos, and just mean you won't get many photos on your memory card, or that your computer and the camera itself will slow down..

If you like the look of the Sony, how about the W55, which has 7MP, still more than you really need..

The T100 is very small and has some nice features..

For 130 you could have the highly acclaimed Fuji F31, which will be great indoors..

Consider the Panasonic FX12, which has an image stabiliser to keep your shots sharp when your hands aren't so steady..

Or the Canon Ixus 70. A good all round small camera. I presume you want a pretty small camera?.

Leave enough money (10-20) for at least a 1Gb memory card..

Thank you very much,.

I have been looking at the cameras you mentioned, and others. I am willing to pay up to 250 for a camera that will last me for a while..

Cyber-shot DSC-T100 silver I have seen this one, sounds good.Nikon Coolpix P5000NIKON Coolpix S50c.

What do you think of the above 3?..

Http://www.dcresource.com has just reviewed the T100. They thought it was okay, but not the greatest. If you want 5x zoom and a camera that goes in your shirt pocket, it fits the bill..

The Nikon S50c is a similar size ans shape to the T100, but by all accounts is pretty average, so I wouldn't recommend it..

The P5000 is a very different camera to the others. It's not nearly as small. It has lots of manual controls, like a mini SLR. It's pretty good, but all the reviews moan that it's very slow. If you want manual controls and don't mind a slightly bigger camer, I reckon you'd be better off with the Canon A570IS..

Another for you to consider is the Panasonic TZ2 (or TZ3 with 3 inch screen). A 10x zoom in a smallish camera and great fun..

Don't be seduced by megapixels and zooms. For indoors it's great sensor will be extremely useful. Read the review on this site. -Bruce..

The G3 is quite an old camera. It's pretty big too, has a fairly wide angle f/2 lens and a hotshoe and does RAW. An expensive 'prosumer' camera in it's day..

The Canon A630 is a recent camera that's good for amateurs and enthusiasts. Like the G3 it has a flip out screen, but it doesn't have the same lens, is smaller, cheaper etc..

I can agree with andrew. don't look at the 12MP it is a marketing method. the images of the W200 posted in the sony forum look bad. 12MP are just too much for such a ccd..

I bought the T100 cause it is a great mix of IQ, features and size as andrew already said. it's an amazing all purpose cam!..

I recently ordered the Canon A630 for elementary school where I work. It arrived this week and my kids and I have been testing it out. It's easy to use and a LOT of fun. In my opinion, the image quality and color are very good. I'm thinking of ordering one for myself..
