Buying filters off ebay
Hi all,.

Has anyone heard of any stories of fake filters being bought off ebay? I want to get a hoya cpl filter, like the one below, but at a third of the price (inc dellivery) compared to Jessops, my suspicions are slightly raised...

Many thanks.

Nick,.

I have never bought on line from a Hong Kong source. There are a number of online UK retailers who I have bought larger items from (flashes etc) and I am sure they would be reliable but not as cheap..

If you need help locating one come back to me. Aspens of Hereford comes to mind. Many of them use a Buy it Now format only..

No problems at all.Yes, there are rogues..

This doesn't strike me as one. There are some nasty feedbacks in there! But VERY few compared to what they ship..

I have bought in HK in person, and prices there ARE this low, compared to good old rip off UK..

Another mail order thought is B&H in New York, or Arlington Camera, in Texas. Good ole US of A. 1/2 UK price, near enough.############\_O Tim Yorath#####/\/>##### /@ UK.#### # \.

Thanks guys..

The only thing I am worried about is buying a fake filter - if there is such a thing..

I have bought many things from Hong Kong through Ebay - mostly small things like chargers etc, and never had a problem..

I think I will take the jump, as this item is selling in Jessops for about 99, which is unbelievable....

Thanks again.

I just bought a hoya from an HK dealer on ebay for the same reason - it was much cheaper. Haven't recieved it yet, but I figured the cost was low enough that if it turned out badly I could jsut chalk it up to a learning experience. I did purchase a shutter release from another HK dealer recently and everythin went fine. I'll let you know when I get my filter if it looks like a counterfit..

Thanks mike. Let me know how it goes. I think they will be fine, as that is how much I believe they cost in Asia. It is just we pay so much in the UK, we are staggered when these things turn out to be so cheap in other countries. It also happens here. I recently bought from a UK online (not ebay) site a 2 gig sandisk extreme III SD card for 27 inc delivery.

It is maybe not fair of me to slam Jessops too much, as I have recently bought my D80 with an 18-135mm lens at 689. This is as cheap as anywhere in the UK I have seen. But accesories are unbelievably expensive there...

Also another question. Is it worth buying a standard Hoya Circular poloarising filter, or going for the pro digital version with it's super duper multi coated finish. The difference in price is 18 for the standard and 34 for the Pro Digital. Both these prices include postage....

Thanks..

I have the standard circular polarizer and have been very happy with it. I think the extra coatings are meant to reduce things like flare and ghosting, but I'm not sure about that. If thats the advantage, you could probably get similar results by making sure you use your lens hood in bright conditions..

I have recently purchased Hoya Pro1 Digital UV filters on eBay from HongKong. 77mm from hvStar, 72mm from FedTic. Both were shipped same day and took about two weeks to arrive in MD,USA. They look genuine, but I am a novice to fabulous fakes. Am checking into the Hoya China/Japan controversy. Have since found a US Hoya dealer that guarantees Japan w/1 year warranty for not much more: $48 vs.

Will post more as I find out...
