Check out the LS70 or the LZ7 or even the TZ2 or TZ3..

The built in Shake reduction, OIS, is great for little ones that tend to not hold perfectly still. They get great colors and exposure results outside. They are very well priced and durable. The LZ and TZ's have a great reach/zoom. The LS is a 3x zoom..

I have 2 LS70's that can be had for $125 or so. One is always in my car and the other is for my 4yr old who gets great shots with it. Not awesome inside but so long as your in decent light it will do good..

Something sturdy and cheap that will just take decent pictures. Bells and whistles aren't necessary. Should be fun to see what he thinks make good photos..

Ended up buying a Canon 530 with case, I gig card, tripod , batteries and charger, all for $100 shippedamazing what you can buy for so little!.
