Resistance to physical shock drops and knocks is a bit of a niche. Light environmental sealing is a bit more common, as per Fuji Option WP series...
Many, many parents asking about purchasing a camera for their child being deployed to Iraq..
By and far the majority of them end up purchasing the Olympus Stylus 720SW (which is the 770SW's little brother). Now that the 770SW is out, I'd recommend that one..
There was one poster whose son fell on the camera and broke it. But if the fall would break the 720SW, it would surely crush any other camera in it's class.Tim'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' -Mahatma Gandhihttp://www.flickr.com/photos/timskis6/..
I own the Oly 770sw and love it. I've dropped it, sat on it, and had it snorkeling and it's held up great. Also for being a p&s the pictures are very good I've blown them up to 11X14 and they still look great. If you buy through Ritz camera they have an extra warranty you can buy that will cover anything that breaks except fire and theft, so even if you drop it and it breaks into a hundred pieces send them the pieces and they will replace it...
I'm pretty sure that it is my son you were speaking of. I was looking for a replacement for the digital P&S that he landed on during a mortar attack and broke it. He said it gave him a pretty bad camera shaped bruise..
I replaced it with the Olympus stylus 720SW. No problem with it at all according to the kid..
He's due back stateside on 11/11..
DIPics.

I'm sure he'll have endless stories, some he may or may not want to talk about. Hopefully a few images will surface out of it as well!.
Good to hear he's doing ok.Tim'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' -Mahatma Gandhihttp://www.flickr.com/photos/timskis6/..
AS well as the Olympus 770SW you have the Ricoh 500G and 500SE models which are quite rugged and have a wider angle lens than the Oly. There is also the Pentax Optio W30, although that may just be water/dust proof, not ruggedised...
