Beginner's RAW question
Hi folks! I just got my first DSLR yesterday and have started to play around with it (http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1005&message=24329866). It's a (used) Eos 10D. Great fun so far! But now I have another question: why is it that the RAW images I capture are at only 3 MP versus the JPEGs which are all (when using the "BIG" setting) at 6 MP? Are the JPEGs internally interpolated from 3 MP raw data? I'm beginning to realise the advantages of shooting RAW but would like to get the full advertised resolution of 6 MP .

Also, can anyone recommend a "killer" freeware RAW processing app? On the pics above I used RAW Shooter Essentials 2006 (freeware version) for some simple adjustments and FastStone Viewer for bits of post-postprocessing at TIFF level. But as I said, I've only played with the camera for a few hours so far and wouldn't know a pigeon from a porcupine. Any info would thus be greatly appreciated!.

TIA,Andrei..

The Raw images are full-sized. You are being misled and confused by the software that you are using..

The Raw images contain a reduced-resolution "preview" JPEG. This is what you see on the LCD when you review the photo in-camera. And some simple "viewer" programs also use that JPEG rather than going to the considerable trouble of trying to convert the Raw file..

If you use a real Raw converterEOS Viewer Utility and Digital Photo Professional should have come with your camerayou'll see that you have the full resolution available..

Killer? No. There are about two dozen different Raw processors available for Canon files (presuming that you're running Windows XP or Vista). Each has it's strengths and it's weaknesses..

The ones that I know of that are no-cost are:Raw Image Task (ZoomBrowser EX) (Canon SDK)Digital Photo ProfessionalRawShooter:Essentials (discontinued)SilkyPix (free mode)Picasa 2Raw TherapeeUFraw/dcraw.

Note: on the 10D, the first one listed (RIT) was originally released as EOS Viewer Utility..

Also, if you already have Photoshop Elements (3 or up), Photoshop (CS or up), or Lightroom, they can do the conversion for you and updates for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin are free. Many other editing programs include Raw conversion..

By the way, since this was a camera-specific question you probably would have gotten more answers in the 10D forum...

The latest beta release is really nice, with improved interface and features.Output is as good as, or better than, any other converter I've used.Color is accurate, detail extraction is superb, and noise is low..
