any cameras similar to F31fd, but with SD cards?
Any cameras similar to F31fd, but with SD cards? I've heard XD cards were slow in certain areas such as browsing photos on the camera, uploading, etc. So this concerns me and I want a compact camera around the price range and specifications range of the F31fd that has speed in turning on, taking snapshots, browsing photos, and uploading..

Also does having a viewfinder really matter?.

Does anyone have any suggestions or is the f31fd the way to go regardless of the xd card?..

There is nothing else in a small camera with the high ISO capabilities of the F31. If you want high ISO it is probably the way to go regardless of other drawbacks..

I like having an optical viewfinder. Simon listed in his disadvantages of the F31 that the LCD was hard to see in bright sunlight. That is a big problem for me here in Florida. It is also easier to acquire and follow a moving target with an eyelevel viewfinder especially when zoomed. It would probably be nearly impossible in bright sunlight with the F31. I would have to make or buy a fold-out shade for the LCD..

The F31 isnt as bad as predecessors for clipping highlights, but it is still a camera without decent setup controls. If Casio can give you 5 settings each for contrast, sharpening and saturation in most cameras surely Fuji can..

For still subjects stabilization gives better photos than high ISO. But having high ISO capability is more versatile. I would personally prefer the combination of decent ISO 400 quality, stabilization and an optical viewfinder found in some of the Canon SD models. They arent very configurable either though...

Well I also live in a sunny area, in southern california, do you think the LCD is really that bad in sunlight?.

Also I really just want to take a good camera around with me often in case I see something happen that I want to take a quick snapshot of, but I do want some quality photos. I am not a pro photographer though, I don't know much about it. I am upgrading from a cheap HP photosmart 318! haha I wouldn't mind taking pictures at night as welll and I've heard the F31 is really good for that..

With the Canon SD's, they seem too costly for me compared to the F31...

I just got my F31FD, I live in OC, Ca it was really sunny today, I didnt have any issues seeing the screen..

Also, the newer models have xD AND SD slots. You can use both. I don't know where to get the one that has the upgraded SD. The one I was shipped off amazon (from a certified fuji dealer) didnt have the SD. I could care less though. Doesn't really matter other than that xd is more expensive but all you really need is a 1gb card and that's pretty much it.

The image quality is really amazing. By far the best compact I've ever laid hands on. BY FAR...

Is the XD card slower then SD? I've heard some say that XD is slower the SD when uploading pictures to PC, when browsing pictures on the camera, and reloading the camera after a picture has been taken (shutter speed?)..

I made a mistake, the dual xd/sd combo is on newer fuji models (f31fd is still the champ though). Anyway, Yah xD uploads a little slower but to call it a deal breaker would be foolish. The quality of images taken by this camera is worth putting up with a minor thing like that. You can take consecutive pictures pretty fast, you can even enable a setting for it... but that uses more battery life. Battery lasts forever anyway so I guess it doesnt matter much really. This camera is one of the fastest compacts from what I've read and it's definitely faster than my older compacts...

Do you know if it's really slow to browse pictures with the XD card in the camera?..

I have a F313fd, and two Canon dSLRs. Haven't noticed the F31 being particularly slow for viewing images. I use a card reader to download the images from all my cameras, it is much faster than using the camera directly - they are extremely inexpensive. I don't know of any camera (even the $8k ones) that download as fast as a reader..
