Advice on Canon memory card
I am not familiar with memory cards, and I need to purchase one for a Canon 350D body. I understand that the Canon uses a compact flash card. I was wondering what is a good brand to purchase? Or are they all about the same? Also, what size would I have to purchase in order to hold about 30-40 pics?.

Thanks!..

You can buy CF flash cards all over the place, to only hold 30-40 pictures depends on what compression and format you shoot (JPG vs. RAW). For RAW you would need a 512, for JPG a 128MB..

I buy mine here most of the time, great service and quick delivery..

One big thought is why limit yourself to 30-40pictures when you can get a can get a 1GB card for around $10 and a 2GB card for around $20 and event get a decent performance one for say $30..

A 1GB card will let you hold 260+ JPG(at the highest quality settings) and about 110 RAW shots..

Spend the extra money and buy a larger card espeically for how little extra money it is. It is so worth it especially if you ever just want one more shot and you run into the "CF Card FULL" message because you wanted to save a few $$ and miss the shot because the moment is over by the time you delete an image..

I agree with Mr Fixit. Cards cost so little get at least a 1 Gb card. It would be crazy to get a smaller card..

Secondly do not try to save money by getting some unhreard of brand. Get a major brand. I use SANDISKm, which is one of the top brands, but ther are ara few other big names as well..

You do know that you can change the quality of your pictures on the camera? If you choose low quality images you can get hundreds onto a 1Gb card. The higher the quality image, the more space each picture takes, but obviously the better the image..

If you are not going to shoot RAW, I would recommend you use the best quality jpg images. You will still get plenty on your 1 Gb card...

Wow... I didn't realize they were so cheap. I will definitely be getting a larger card. Thanks!..

Sandisk and Lexar are probably the two best-branded media. Both have had rebate frenzies lately; if my $70 MIR gets accepted, I'll have gotten a Lexar 133x 8GB CF card for ~$40 incl shipping. Sandisk had a similar wave..

There are other vendors that people have had good experiences with, such as Ridata IIRC. NewEgg.com is one vendor that often has decent deals..

My advice would be that, given that prices have dropped quite a bit over the past few years, you get a large, fast card the prices aren't that much different unless you go for the highest speeds or capacities, and you may find it useful should you go on a trip or photograph an event. There can be many possible shots during an hour-long sporting event, for instance. Or a wedding reception....

It also gives you more headroom for experiments trying a variety of compositions and exposure settings, for instance or firing off bursts during action or for using space-hungry settings like a RAW + JPG (used where the JPG might get used if satisfactory, but the RAW is still available for post-processing)...

I needed some more storeage in a hurry recently and everyone had sold out of the larger Sandisk cards which I normally used, so I took a chance and got a cheap as chips Adata 4Gb card. It takes an identicle number of shots in quick fire mode, and an almost identicle time before the red light goes out and I can start shooting again..

Having said that, I will almost certainly go back to Sandisk next time, but at the same time, I don't expect to get any problems with the Adata card. BTW They say it's a good idea to reformat the card in the camera every time you empty it..

I echo what others have said and use sandisk ultra 2s in my canon 350d when I go on holiday. 1gb gives you plenty of space...

Just remember what ever cards you decide to get, do not buy any cards on ebey or amazon market place, they only seem to sell fakes. I use sandisk ultra & sandisk extreme 111,..
