Canon A50 - My Thoughts

Comments (13)

I received my Canon A50 yesterday. I purchased it from Henry's in Canada. It's a great camera. It's going to take a while to figure out how to make the automatic settings do what I want in terms of creative picture taking, but I've already got some nice shots, and I've only taken around 50, mainly just testing things out..

I've had the A50 for a week now. I took it on a day hike and kept it in my windbreaker pocket. I took it out many times to take 48 different pictures, half using the LCD and also reviewing pics, until the battery gave out. I was impressed with the battery life. The size of the cam and it's ease of taking it out, shooting, and putting it back in the pocket was really nice. The images are very true to color.

This is not bad though, as the cam shows detail in many shadow areas, which is nice. Flesh tones are great. Pics on cloudy days lack bright color, but I think that's normal..

You can adjust the exposure using the "P", or manual, setting. Go to the menu, and you can change the exposure to reduce the glare. I don't have my camera with me right now, so I can't tell you exactly where it is, but you can adjust the EV value up and down..

I am torn between the Canon A50 and the Kodak DC240. I have some questions for the A50 owners? Would you like to have the special features (borders, black/white, sephia) that are offered by the DC240? How much does a recharger and batteries cost? I am a true novice, but did notice some differences when comparing photos for the 2 camera on COMPAROMETER. I found the A50 for $399 and the 240 for about $450. The only difference is USB and the fact that Kodak gives you batteries and a charger. In fact Lexar Media is coming out with a Compact Flash card that is USB compatible next month. Any views pro or con would be great...

5 Stars - *****.

I've had this camera for a several days now (Worldwide Direct (buydig.com) - $412) and think it is truly amazing. The size and style are very impressive - a conversation piece on it own. Pushing pictures to my tv was very simple. Moving them to my CPU was also simple (plug-n-.

Play). The download speed was longer than I anticipated - I am REALLY glad I bought the optional power kit ($89). The picture quality still blows me away - it makes my 35mm APS seem dull. The features that this camera comes with are PLENTY. Besides, the software will allow you to change the photos to your hearts content. The Adobe software is above average. The Canon software is good - but would be better if it were all integrated (there are several different programs for doing different things: stitching, downloading, etc.)Very Easy use, plenty of features, amazing pictures, and small/light/sexy/rugged..

I agree with all of the good points/features that were brought out by others who have commented on the A50. But I feel I need to add a les than positive comment about the weak flash I encountered on the one I owned/used for 1 week and then returned. All of my images (well within the range of the flash specifications) were dark/underexposed. I found it difficlt to compensate for this by adjusting the EV. I compared the A50 to an Olympus 220L. The Olympus has a much more illuminating and better flash. I was uisng the lithium battery in the Canon, not the Canon battery pack..

I've been receiving a lot of e-mail regarding my post from July 14, so I thought I would just put the response here. The place where I saw the A50 for $399 had them on backorder but could not provide an ETA, so I figure it was probably a bait & switch tactic. I ended up going to www.SSDOnline.com through the link on the Deals page, so even though I paid more for the A50 kit, I got it the next day.Recent e-mails have indicated the price is around $427, which is less than what I paid for it. Then again, I've had mine for over a month and was able to use it on my recent vacation!.

(Looking sheepish...)Upon further inspection, the post regarding the A50 for $399 wasn't even originally mine! I had done so much research and cost comparisons that I just assumed it was when people e-mailed me, because a) I did see it for $399, and b) I was also looking at the 240. Wow, talk about coincidences!Regardless, my comments still stand, but you may wish to contact Don Marrow (), whose post this really was..

I've had my A50 for the entire summer, and I can't get over what a package it is! It is small enough that I never hesitate to take it anywhere. All the images so far have been of superb quality (but then again, I am a novice). I would just like to say that if you are going to buy an A50, go ahead and plan on getting the DK-110 charger kit from Canon. It includes AC power, a rechargable battery and a recharger. I pretty much view this as essential. Downloading images to your computer can be really slow, and there's no point in running that off of expensive battery power. The rechargeable battery will pay for itself fairly quickly.I am keeping a running tab of my personal experiences with the A50 at http://.

Hi, I love canon digital camera a lot as their pictures contain somekind.

Of smoothness that you would expect from high quality film photo. However, Pro70 is too expensive for me. A50 would have been my settled.

Choice if I had not noticed the up coming S10 three weeks ago.So, now, should I wait for the S10 or take the A50 given there much a a.

Price gap in between. Also, I read that S10 will nolonger support the.

Highly appreciated CCDRAW format of Canon. Is that true ? If yes, it is.

A true big loss for our Canon fans. Thanks for reading.

Hi,.

After looking at various digcam models (Canon A50, Olympus D450, Fuji 600Z) I setteled on A50.Primary reason was attrective style, metal body, small size and high resolution LCD (unofficial number is 130K pixel which is twice the other models). The D450 seems a very good contender though I liked the size of A50. S10,Fuju 1700 are upcoming 2K+ ccds but more expensive..I ordered mine yesterday and hope to get it by.

The long weekend.. Next important purchase is rechargable batteries, 24MB card and PCMCIA adapter.Robert.

I got my A50 lastnight. Nice little camera.I tried out and everything worked as expected.Though I wish flash was stronger.I can also see the need for rechargable battery. It's too bad they don't make LiIon batteries for this camera (only Fuji has one for their camera). One hint and a question..There is a very easy way to switch between picture.

Resolution mode (though limited in choices).A - Full auto always gives you LARGE (either fine.

Or course) setting.P - Program mode gives you choice of all 5 formats. So setup smaller format in P mode. Then simply use either P or A mode and you can take pictures of different sizes without going through menu.Question: Did your camerabox (Big box with A50 pictures on it) came in shrinkwrap ? I am trying to figure out if the store sent me open box item..thanks.

Robert.

My Canon A50 was not shrink-wrapped. It would be interesting to hear if others came the same way. I love the camera and am in the process of setting up an online photo album. I will let everyone know when it's ready. By the way get the DK-110 rechargeable battery / ac adapter if you are thinking about buying the camera. All digicams eat batteries, so this isn't unique to this camera...
