17-35 2.8D Lens for D80?
I have been a Nikon user for many, many years, my first body being and old Nikkormat FTN. I still own a F2A and a FE2 with many lenses. I want to switch over to digital, but have some confusion as to compatibility of lenses and bodies..

Can anyone tell me if the 17-35mm 2.8D ED-IF AF-S is compatible with the D80 camera body? I read the /img/avatar3.jpgs manual for a friends D80 and I believe it says it is compatible with D and G lenses. Yet, when I do a search on B&H web site, the 17-35D does not come up for the D80 body..

I am obviously looking for the same razor sharp glass I am used to from the old days of film. I hear nothing but good about this lens and hope it is compatible..

I will be using this info to make a purchase in the near future so I'd appreciate knowledgable responses..

Thanks in advance,MM..

A 17-35 2.8D AF-S will work with all Nikon cameras from F3 and forward, even with D40. You may find the combination not properly balanced since the lens is a big chunk of glass and the D80 is a light weight. Still, for a wide angle this shouldn't be much of a problem..

A d80 will work fine with any Nikon AF lens. It will work with most 3rd party nikon AF lenses. Ai mount manual focus lenses (except a very few, check your manual) will mount and can be used but you're own your own for metering..

It's a source of confusion for many but it really is as simple as this.Don't wait for the Nikon D-whatever, have fun now!http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_wijnands/..

The 17-35 will work just fine on a D80. And while big for a wide angle zoom, it is not nearly as big as the 28-70, 80-200 or 70-200 VR, so I think it will "balance" just fine on a D80. But if you don't already own this lens, you might consider the 17-55 f/2.8 DX instead. I like the 17-35 for landscape shots, but I don't use it for anything else. On a Nikon DSLR, the "crop factor" makes the 12-24 DX more useful to me for landscapes, and it is less expensive. On the other hand, if full frame sensors become the norm in 5 or 10 years, that 17-35 would be great..

Just some food for thought.Good shooting,.

Thanks to all for the responses. At least I know for sure the "D" lenses will work. At your suggestions though, I will very likely purchase the 17-55 f/2.8DX instead..

So now the question I asked first is a mute point anyway..

The 17-55, coupled with the 55-200VR, should be all the focal lengths I'll ever need. Sure I'll always want more, but "wanting" is different than "needing"..

Many thanks,MM..

What do you mean by "being on your own for metering" with AI lenses? Doesn't the lens aperature ring and operation sync up with the camera TTL light metering system?..

Nope. It doesn't. It can mount and it will work but only in M and you'll need to guesstimate proper exposure..

The 17-55 f/2.8 is a great lens, on my D200 90% of the time. I use it for landscapes but have recently bought the Sigma 10-20, which some prefer to the Nikon 12-24, and the extra 2mm does make a difference..
